For today’s blog post, I wanted to share the links to some of my favorite articles and resources relating to queer artists in the dance industry; especially highlighting personal testimonies from professionals currently working in the field.
This is an article from the NY Times, highlighting the work of dance artists Katy Pyle (they/them), Adriana Pierce (she/her), and Alyah Baker (she/her) in representation of queer women and non-binary people in ballet spaces.
Pointe Magazine is one of the leading publications for all things ballet. This article focuses on two queer ballerinas who have felt isolated working in a professional company due to their sexual orientation.
Dance Magazine is another leading publication followed by dance artists across the globe. This article includes personal stories from gender queer performers in ballet, Lindy Hop, the vogue ball scene, and freelance contemporary dance artists.
This is a news article from NBC, highlighting the queer activism work by an Indigenous, Two Spirit youth leader named Harris, of the Narragansett tribe. Their work of redefining dance forms previously assigned to men or women has made a ripple effect in the young members of the community.
This is a scholarly article written by Erica Best, a student at Ursinus College. The article breaks down some of the struggles that trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming folks face in the dance world. It also includes 10 personal interviews with artists across the US, discussing how the industry can evolve to make dance spaces safer for gender queer individuals.
