Hi there! My name is Kennedy Cole (they/them) and I am a non-binary dance artist, researcher, and queer activist.
A little bit about me is that I love to travel, and just this past summer I had the opportunity to work in Georgia, Colorado, and San Francisco. Whenever I travel I like to explore local coffee shops since I worked as a barista for two years. I'm a bit of a coffee snob, so I enjoy seeing what new places have to offer.
I'm currently obsessed with the 70's aesthetic and am wrapped in a mustard yellow, crochet blanket as I write this. I also enjoy the music, and in cases where artist's discographies span multiple decades, the albums released during the 70's are usually my favorite. As a dancer, music has always played a key role in my life. I also enjoy soul music, big band jazz, indie, punk, and psychedelic rock.
Originally from Upstate NY, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance, and a Certificate in Professional Social Media from The University of Akron. While in school I have had the opportunity to choreograph three complete pieces and am currently in process for my fourth (more to come on that later). Choreography is my favorite creative outlet and has been a vital tool in my growth as a human and an artist.
Within this blog I plan to talk about queer choreographers and how their work offers unique perspectives and commentary on their experiences. By creating work with diverse body types and identities, more people are able to relate to the work.
I hope you find something that piques your interest in my upcoming posts. I plan to share my current work in progress, and how I am creating a contemporary ballet duet with two women. I also plan to highlight queer artists in the industry and how they are using their voice to challenge tradition and make space for all identities in the dance industry. There may be some content relating to gender expression, and how I have grown to love what I see in the mirror and express myself through fashion as a means of activism.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy and I am excited to share my thoughts with you.
Warmth and light!
-Kennedy
